About the Namibian Bar Association
The Namibian Bar Association (NBA) is a voluntary, non-profit organisation established to serve the professional needs of advocates in Namibia. The association's constitution was drafted by Herman Steyn, a founding member, and signed on December 16, 2023, by him, along with its founding members, Marius Boonzaier and Apie Small. The NBA is a home for its members, where knowledge, skills, and information are exchanged. It emphasises sharing ideas and experiences about the practice of law. Its core objective is to respect, protect, and promote the interests of its members and the Namibian society at large. The association's constitution guides its members to maintain the highest level of professional behaviour and expertise. Members are expected to uphold the normative values of the Namibian Constitution and to act independently and objectively in the interest of their clients. To be eligible aspirant applicants must be an admitted legal practitioner in Namibia who is currently, or intends to, practice as an advocate for their own account and is exempt from holding a fidelity fund certificate. Membership is automatically disqualified for anyone who is a member of another society, association, or organization of advocates in Namibia or a secret society, association, or organisation. The association may require prospective members to undergo practical training, gain experience, and pass an examination, though it can grant exemptions at its discretion. Members may share expenses and liabilities related to their practice with other members of the association but cannot share fees. The association caters for pupillage, which require applicants to submit a written application along with proof of their qualifications and experience. The association aims to expand its membership. It is further improving networking and collaboration with other relevant stakeholder’s engagements. Additionally, the NBA has constructed an arbitration facility. The association believes through collective effort and innovative thinking; all obstacles can be overcome.
